Where Can I Put a Skip?

Soil Skip

You are looking to hire a skip but before the skip arrives you need to decide where to put it. In this guide we discuss all the questions that may arise about where you can put a skip.

Can a Skip be Placed on Public Land?

Skips can be placed on public land, however a skip permit will need to be acquired before the skip arrives. Skip permits are obtained from the local council. These permits can be applied for by your skip hire company. Most councils can take up to 5 working days to make a decision on whether to grant the skip permit, but waiting time will vary. The skip permit will be an additional fee and permit prices will differ county to county.

At Just Hire we can organise your skip permit when you hire a skip through us.

Can a Skip be placed on a Public Road?

Skips can be placed on public highways but again you will need a skip permit from the local council. If the skip is placed on a public highway other rules may apply. Some councils require lighting, cones and a telephone number to be placed on and around the skip. This will allow the skip to remain lit during the evening.

Councils can reject skip permits due to the location you intend to place the skip. Such as a position that could reduce highway width, or reduce visibility on the road for drivers. It could also be rejected if it will impact parking, cause issues with access to properties or endanger road users. Please also bear in mind an 8 yard skip in most cases is the largest skip that can be placed on a public highway.

How Long can a Skip be Left on the Road?

Skips can be left on a road for how long they have permission from the local council, the permission being the skip permit. A skip permit typically lasts one or two weeks, but each council can vary. Always check with the skip company for how long the skip can be kept on the road. Most companies will have a standard skip hire period, so in most cases it will be collected off the road when that time elapses.

What about a Private Road or Private Land?

If a skip is placed on any private property and you own the property or have permission from the person who does then no permit will be required.

Can a Skip be put on a Pavement?

Regardless if you have a skip permit skips cannot be placed on a pavement. This will effect pedestrians and block access for those pushing prams and those in wheelchairs. If you place a skip on a public pathway you will receive a fine from your local authority, as is against regulations.

What is the Ideal Skip Placement?

The ideal location to place your skip would be on a driveway. You will not need a permit and therefore pay less for your skip hire. You will have easy access to fill the skip and won't be in danger of any traffic flow passing you by.

Just make sure there is enough space on the driveway for the size skip you have ordered. Obviously this will effect your parking but a much more cost effective and efficient option.

Can a Skip be Dropped over a Fence?

This is dependent on the skip hire company and the skip lorries they have. In most cases companies will be able to drop a skip over a fence that is a maximum of 4ft in height. You will need to be prepared to sign a waiver just in case any damage is caused when skip delivery is attempted. If you have a fence contact the skip hire company first and tell them about where you want it dropped.
