Skip bags are a perfect alternative to skip hire, when you have a small amount of rubbish to get rid of. Skip bags are large, durable waterproof bags that can be filled with waste and taken away. In most cases you will buy the bag yourself and pay a waste disposal company to take it away.
Skip bag sizes include:
1 yard Skip Bag (standard skip bag)
Dimensions: 90cm x 90cm x 90cm
1.5 yard Skip Bag (Megabag)
Dimensions: 180cm x 90cm x 70cm
4.5 yard Skip Bag (Hipposkip)
Dimensions: 210cm x 165cm x 100cm
The amount of waste that can be put in the skip bag depends on the size of the skip bag. See below the sizes and the weight of waste they can carry.
1 yard = 1 tonne
1.5 yards = 1.5 tonnes
4.5 yards = 1.5 tonnes
Skip bags can be filled with the following waste:
Construction Waste: timber, rubble and bricks
Heavy Waste: aggregates and soil
General Waste: items that would normally go in your weekly black bin collection
Green Waste: soil, weeds and turf
Paper & Cardboard: packaging or promotional cards
Plastic: plastic bottles, fairy liquid bottles etc.
Domestic waste: furniture and carpet
Commercial or Trade Waste: large amount of mixed waste
Metals: from drink cans, foil, bed frames
Wood: old wood flooring, scrap wood from DIY
Skip bags cannot be filled with any hazardous waste. Prohibited items include:
Electrical appliances, such as computer monitors

Filled Paint Tins
Skip bags are great for all sorts of smaller jobs:
Small garden projects
DIY in the house
Small household projects
The skip bag needs to be placed somewhere that will be easy to fill it but also that will be easy to collect once it has been filled. One suggestion would be to place the skip bag in your front garden or on your driveway. Here it can be easily collected by the waste removal company and you have easy access.
Skip bags can be placed on a public road however you will require a skip permit from the local council. Please bare in mind skip permits are an additional cost and can be rejected by the local authority.
Skip bags will be cheaper then hiring a skip in most cases. Skip bags can be purchased from retailers for as little as £11. Then it just depends the waste disposal company in your area and how much they will charge to collect it.
Skip bags are cost effective when it comes to small amounts of waste. However, if you overfill the skip bag or cannot fit all your rubbish in the skip bag it will end up costing more.
